MUMBAI: Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday put the spotlight on Nashik-based astrologer Ashok Kharat, urging citizens to come forward with any information about him as a serious probe unfolds into allegations of sexual exploitation and fraud. Addressing the state Assembly, Fadnavis said the government would not tolerate any form of deception, directly naming Kharat while appealing for public cooperation in the investigation. Kharat, who is associated with a temple trust in Sinnar, has been accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting a 35-year-old woman between 2022 and 2025 under the pretext of spiritual guidance. Police have alleged that he used intimidation and manipulation to continue the abuse. The chief minister reiterated that the matter is being monitored at the highest level and assured that no accused would be spared, stressing that protecting the dignity of women remains a top priority. He also said efforts are underway to encourage more victims to come forward, with some already responding.He maintained that misuse of influence to exploit women is a grave offence and assured strict punishment for those found guilty. Kharat was earlier in police custody, and a Nashik court has extended it until March 29 to allow further investigation. Authorities have also pointed to fraud-related allegations against him, even as they continue to widen the probe.(With agency inputs)
