Udupi: Minister for Backward Class Welfare and Kannada & Culture Shivaraj S Tangadagi unveiled a 31-ft bronze statue of Sri Madhava Mangala Pujarya, the ninth and last hereditary Kulaguru of the coastal Karnataka Mogaveera community, at Sri Mahalakshmi Temple in Uchila on Friday.Built using around 14,000 kg of bronze at a cost of about Rs 3 crore, the statue was erected following a resolution passed by the Mogaveera community and an Ashtamangala Prashne (astrological consultation), which recommended its installation at the temple.Jaya C Kotian, president of Dakshina Kannada Mogaveera Mahajana Sangha, said the Mogaveera community’s Guru lineage spans nearly 1,000 years, with nine generations of Gurus guiding the community religiously and socially. Sri Madhava Mangala Pujarya was the last in the lineage, which ended with his demise on March 31, 1966.Community leaders said the statue is expected to enhance the temple’s religious significance and boost tourism by attracting visitors interested in the community’s history and Guru tradition.
