Srinagar, Sep 12: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has welcomed the BRICS condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack, while urging India to adopt a consistent position on terrorism and civilian suffering worldwide.
The 18th BRICS Summit, hosted by India in New Delhi, adopted the New Delhi Declaration on Saturday, strongly condemning the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack and reaffirming a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism, including terrorist financing and safe havens.
Welcoming the move, Mufti said India, as the current BRICS chair, should have shown “courage and true leadership” by ensuring that the grouping’s position also unequivocally addressed civilian suffering in Gaza and the US-Israeli military action against Iran.
“Terrorism cannot be condemned selectively. Civilian blood has no nationality, and international justice cannot have double standards,” she said.
Mufti said the principle of condemning attacks on civilians must apply universally, irrespective of their nationality, religion or geopolitical alignment.
She also welcomed the BRICS call for humanitarian assistance to Gaza, but said relief alone could not substitute for accountability and an end to violence.
Referring to the declaration’s call for restraint, civilian protection and dialogue in West Asia, Mufti said such commitments must be applied consistently.
“If the international community is serious about ending terrorism and protecting civilians, there can be no hierarchy of victims and no selective outrage,” she said.
Mufti said India’s BRICS leadership offered an opportunity to strengthen the voice of the Global South and advocate a rules-based international order in which terrorism, attacks on civilians and violations of international law are condemned irrespective of who commits them.
