Few actors have embodied tragedy on screen with the grace and quiet anguish of Meena Kumari, and Chalte Chalte with Meena Kumari, presented by Pierrot’s Troupe and Bazm-e Urdu, pays fitting homage to the legendary actress through an evocative blend of theatre, music and dance.The musical dance drama explores the duality that defined Meena Kumari’s life – the “one and only” superstar adored by millions and the “one and lonely” woman shaped by heartbreak, poetry and solitude. The production revisits Meena Kumari’s films, relationships and artistic legacy, while celebrating her profound and enduring love for the Urdu language. The play centres on the matinee idol’s final moments as she reads from her diary of poems, mourns friendships fractured by alcoholism and reflects on theloneliness that marked the closing chapter of her life. Yet even in the face of death, she retains her trademark wit, mocking the prosaic diagnosis of liver cirrhosis. “What a strange name,” she remarks, contrasting it with Urdu’s evocative darde-jigar, a phrase so poetic that it almost makes suffering itself sound beautiful. The production unfolds across three distinct performance spaces. On the left, Anju Chaabra delivers a compelling solo performance as the brooding Meena Kumari. To the right, a three-member ensemble led by Farrukh Baig performs live renditions of the ghazals and nazms penned by Meena Kumari herself, many of them set to music and sung on stage for the first time. At centre stage, Kathak dancer Astha Gupta weaves movement into the storytelling through graceful semi-classical interpretations of Meena Kumari’s iconic dance sequences, enriching the production with visual splendour and lyrical elegance.The play’s most compelling features are Chaabra’s solo act and the soulful performances that lend authenticity and emotional depth to the production, allowing audiences to encounter not just the celebrated actress but also the sensitive shayara behind the legend. The result is a visually rich portrait of a woman whose legacy transcends her image as Hindi cinema’s ‘tragedy queen’, revealing a gifted poet of rare vulnerability.
