Gurgaon: The civic body has identified 87 unsafe and dangerous buildings across six zones and is preparing to demolish them. The buildings were identified during a survey conducted by MCG after seven people died in the Satya Niketan building collapse on Aug 26. Show-cause notices have been issued to the owners of 66 buildings, while the rest will get them soon.According to the survey, the maximum number of unsafe buildings, 35, has been identified in Zone 1, followed by 18 in Zone 5, 12 in Zone 3, nine each in zones 4 and 6 and four in Zone 2. The areas where these buildings are located are Chakkarpur, Kanhai, Begampur Khatola, Badhshahpur and Nathupur, besides others. The corporation officials said the action is aimed at addressing potential risks posed by structurally unsafe buildings and ensuring compliance with the rules. These buildings had visible cracks, structural tilt and other physical defects.A building in Nathupur has been declared unsafe as it is a seven-storey house and has narrow entry and exit points. The officials decided in Thursday’s meeting that the building has to be demolished manually as the approach road is too narrow for machines and excavators.Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya said, “All prescribed procedures, including the issuance of notices, will be completed before further action is initiated, and public safety remains the priority.”The civic body did not specify a date for the start of demolitions or provide details about the structural condition, location or occupancy status of the 87 buildings. On the identification of these buildings, an MCG engineer said, “In the survey, we have identified buildings which are in a dilapidated state. A majority of these buildings are in villages and have visible cracks and defects.”Officials said they initiated a fresh survey in Sept this year, days after the building collapse in Satya Niketan in Delhi. Last year in March, MCG officials said they would hire a private agency to conduct a structural audit of nearly 87 buildings declared “dangerous” in a survey conducted by a private agency hired by the MCG in 2021-22.According to the Haryana Municipal Corporation Act 1994, these buildings will have to be vacated if there is a decision to demolish them. Haryana Human Rights Commission too, last year had directed MCG to take action against these buildings, following which the corporation decided to conduct the audit and take action accordingly.
