Mysuru: After years of complaints about abandoned vehicles occupying roadsides and public spaces, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has launched a drive to clear unused and derelict vehicles from across the city. The civic body has issued a public notice directing owners to voluntarily remove abandoned, scrap, and unserviceable vehicles from roads, footpaths, and other public places by Aug. 15.According to the MCC, several vehicles have been left unattended for long periods on public roads, pavements, road margins, and other civic spaces. These vehicles not only obstruct the free movement of pedestrians and traffic but also pose potential safety hazards. The corporation said they contribute to garbage accumulation and serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other disease vectors, affecting the city’s cleanliness and aesthetics.The MCC has warned that its officials will begin field inspections from Aug. 16 and affix notices to identified vehicles. Owners who fail to remove their vehicles within the stipulated period will face further action, to be taken in coordination with the regional transport office (RTO) and the police.Invoking Section 127 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, the corporation said it is empowered to remove abandoned vehicles and those causing obstructions in public places. The cost of towing and transportation will be recovered from the registered owners. In addition, penalties, parking fees, and transportation charges may be imposed. Where necessary, vehicles may be disposed of through the prescribed legal process, including e-auction. Registered owners will be held liable for all costs and legal consequences arising from such action.MCC Commissioner M.K. Savitha appealed to vehicle owners and the public to cooperate by removing such vehicles before the Aug. 15 deadline, helping keep public spaces free of obstructions and maintain the city’s cleanliness.
