Pune: A first-year Master of Computer Applications (MCA) student died, and his college mate was seriously injured after their motorcycle crashed into a median and skidded for nearly 40ft on the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass in the early hours of Saturday.The Bavdhan police identified the deceased as Farhan Shaikh (22), a resident of Karad in Satara district. His college mate, Atharva Kulkarni (22), is undergoing treatment in a private hospital.Sub-inspector Sarang Thakare of the Bavdhan police said Shaikh, Kulkarni and their four friends were heading to Radha Chowk to consume snacks around 4am on Saturday. They left Bhusari Colony in Kothrud on three motorcycles.“Shaikh’s friends told police that there was heavy vehicular traffic on the bypass. While attempting to overtake a truck, Shaikh changed lanes but lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into the median,” Thakare said.He said the motorcycle skidded for nearly 40ft after hitting the median, leaving Shaikh and Kulkarni severely injured.“They were taken to a private hospital in Bavdhan and later shifted to another hospital in Baner, where doctors declared Shaikh dead,” the officer said.Shaikh had recently joined the college, while Kulkarni is a second-year MCA student.
