Nagpur: Mayor Neeta Thakre on Thursday directed officials of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) at Kalamna Market Yard to immediately ensure scientific disposal of accumulated organic waste after expressing concern over the foul smell and environmental hazards caused by rotting vegetable and fruit leftovers.During an inspection of the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Market Yard in Kalamna, the mayor found large quantities of decomposed organic waste dumped on the premises, leading to severe stench and inconvenience to nearby residents.She instructed APMC officials to clear the accumulated waste without delay and prepare a long-term scientific waste management plan to prevent such situations in future.Leader of the ruling party Narendra Borkar also directed officials to ensure that no fresh garbage is dumped at the site. Municipal commissioner Vipin Itankar expressed displeasure over waste dumping inside the market yard and instructed officials to initiate necessary action. He also suggested processing the organic waste into compost.Later, Thakre inspected the Nag river stretch at Karhale Nagar and Bharatwada under Lakadganj Zone. During the visit, she observed that the absence of a retaining wall along the riverbank was causing floodwaters to enter nearby houses during the monsoon. She directed civic officials to take immediate measures, including construction of a protective retaining wall, to safeguard the affected localities.The inspection was attended by additional municipal commissioner Ankit, health committee chairperson Manisha Atkare, corporator Pradeep Pohane, deputy commissioner Rajesh Bhagat, chief sanitation officer Dr Gajendra Mahalle, executive engineer Sachin Rakshamwar, APMC acting deputy secretary Ramesh Chavre, Dhanraj Bagde and other officials.
