Mohali: The recent monsoon has exposed gaps in Mohali’s drainage network, with waterlogging across several sectors flooding roads, disrupting traffic and hampering access to residential areas.Acknowledging the problem, mayor Sarabjit Singh Samana said the municipal corporation (MC) was reviewing the drainage system and focusing on vulnerable points to prevent a repeat during future rains.For residents, recurring waterlogging has become a seasonal challenge, with heavy showers quickly inundating roads and low-lying stretches. The situation has also raised concerns over the city’s drainage capacity and preparedness for intense rainfall.“The recent monsoon exposed drainage-related problems at some places. Our effort is to ensure there is no waterlogging during the next spell of rains. Main drainage points and pipes have been desilted and measures taken to ensure smooth discharge of rainwater,” Samana said.He said the MC was identifying locations where rainwater accumulated and examining the causes behind the problem. Necessary interventions would be carried out to improve drainage and speed up rainwater discharge.The admission comes amid repeated complaints from residents about waterlogging, clogged drains and inadequate rainwater disposal. Besides disrupting traffic, prolonged water accumulation can damage roads and worsen already vulnerable stretches.Roads only after underground worksSamana said the MC would avoid constructing roads that later need to be dug up for sewerage, drainage or utility works.“We do not want newly constructed roads to be dug up again for sewerage, drainage or other underground utility works. Road works will be taken up only after the required underground works are completed,” he said.The mayor said the civic body was reviewing the road network to identify stretches requiring repair, reconstruction and drainage improvements. The recent monsoon, he said, had highlighted infrastructure gaps that would now be addressed to improve the city’s drainage preparedness.
