NEW DELHI: A 54-year-old Manipuri musician died after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of delivery workers and dhaba staff outside his apartment in Kilokari village in southeast Delhi in the early hours of Monday, after he objected to their shouting and drinking, police said.The deceased, C Vikram Singh, a native of Manipur who had been living in Kilokari village for several years, was allegedly attacked after objecting to six men creating a nuisance outside his residence, police said.The Sunlight Colony police station received a PCR call regarding the assault. A preliminary enquiry revealed that Singh sustained injuries during the attack, in which the youths allegedly rained blows and punches on him, news agency PTI reported.Singh’s son, Yaiphaba, rushed him to Holy Family Hospital, where he later died of his injuries, police said.
Suspects detained, police identify accused
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the assault and Singh’s death.Some suspects, including a minor, have been detained, police said, adding that the accused have been identified and efforts are underway to arrest those still at large.The North East Students Society, Delhi University (NESSDU), condoled Singh’s death and described him as a “respected Manipuri musician”.“According to reports, Singh went downstairs from his residence in Kilokri, New Delhi, after a group of six men were allegedly drinking and creating a disturbance outside his apartment. When he requested them to lower the noise, he was reportedly attacked by the group and sustained severe injuries, to which he later succumbed,” the students’ body said.NESSDU condemned the incident as a “senseless act of violence” and urged authorities to ensure a “swift, fair, and thorough investigation” and hold those responsible accountable.
N Biren Singh seeks swift action
Former Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh also expressed concern over Singh’s death and urged Delhi Police to take swift action and conduct a thorough investigation.“Deeply saddened by the tragic passing of renowned Manipuri guitarist and Western music pioneer, Shri Chongtham Vikram Singh, and deeply concerned by the incident in which he was allegedly assaulted near his residence in southeast Delhi.Shri Vikram Singh’s invaluable contribution to music will always be remembered. His untimely passing is a great loss to his family, the music fraternity, and the people of Manipur.
