Akoijam was dismissed from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) with immediate effect following an enquiry into allegations of sexual harassment.
“We trust and deeply respect to Bimol. He is our elected representative. We trust him wholeheartedly for raising the voice of the people of Manipur in Parliament. However, some people from outside the state have levelled inappropriate allegations against him involving some women/girls. Such news has deeply hurt our sentiments. Since there are courts of law to decide what is right and what is wrong, I would like to urge my brother Bimol Akoijam to prove himself innocent. The shame brought upon our brothers and sisters of Manipur needs to be removed at the earliest by proving himself not guilty of all the allegations levelled against him in a court of law,” Robindro Singh said.
A group of people on Wednesday staged a rally towards the BJP office in Manipur, protesting the sexual harassment allegations against Akoijam.
The demonstrators attempted to enter the state BJP office, located less than 100 metres from Lok Bhavan, but were stopped by police personnel.
“We strongly denounce the allegations against Akoijam. The youth stand for Akoijam. He is being targeted by the BJP because he stood up for Manipur. To suppress him is to suppress the state. Do not politicise the issue,” a protester said.
On Tuesday Manipur BJP president and Rajya Sabha member A Sharda Devi, submitted a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu seeking her intervention in the sexual harassment allegations against Akoijam.
JNU on October 9 dismissed professor Akoijam, also a Congress MP, over sexual harassment complaints against him, an official order said, even as he termed his dismissal a “witch hunt” and questioned whether due process was followed.
