Chennai: A 28-year-old worker, Surya, of Elavur village, died after falling from a height of about 30ft while carrying out roof repair work at a private steel plant in the Sipcot industrial estate in Gummidipoondi on Saturday.Police said repair work had been under way for the past five days at the steel plant, where more than 50 workers are employed, after the factory’s roof developed structural damage. Surya had reported for work as usual and was working on the roof when he accidentally lost his footing and fell from 30 ft, sustaining severe injuries.He was rushed to a govt hospital at Kottakarai, where doctors declared him dead. On receiving information, Sipcot police reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Ponneri Government Hospital for postmortem.Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances leading to the accident, including whether adequate safety measures were in place at the factory.
