Gurgaon: A 44-year-old man was shot dead on Basai Road on Thursday morning.The family of the deceased — Mahendra — has claimed that the assailants had come to kill his son instead.Mahendra’s son Sahil said the rivalry dates back to Jan 2025. Mahendra and Sahil used to work at a textile shop in Sadar Bazaar. However, police are verifying the claim.Sahil told reporters the attackers had come to target him, adding that the shooting was linked to an old rivalry involving his elder brother. He named two of the alleged assailants as Dev and Bunty and claimed that they were part of a small gang.A police officer said that the incident took place between 9 and 9.30am. Mahendra, who was riding a motorcycle, was travelling towards Sadar Bazaar with Sahil when another motorcycle carrying three men approached them from behind.Sahil alleged that the man sitting in the middle of the motorcycle fired at his father from close range before the accused fled.Mahendra was rushed to hospital where he died. According to Sahil, one of the three attackers had partially covered his face while the other two were not wearing face coverings. According to sources, a single shot was fired, which struck Mahendra in the stomach, but police haven’t confirmed that.Police confirmed that Sahil was with Mahendra at the time of the shooting but said the motive was yet to be established. Sahil said his brother’s earlier dispute with the accused led to the enmity. His brother is in jail currently in a murder case. He also alleged that members of the group had attacked the associates of Sahil’s family in the past. Police said they received information about the shooting at Sector 9 police station and sent a team to the spot.“The crime team and the scene-of-crime team were also called to the location,” an officer said. The statements of the family are being recorded.ACP (West) Kapil Ahlawat said, “The accused had been identified and multiple teams, including the crime branch, had been deployed to arrest them. Preliminary inquiry has been undertaken.”
