Mumbai: A 49-year-old senior officer attached to a credit cooperative society died nearly three weeks after suffering serious head injuries in a road accident on the Eastern Express Highway near the Airoli Bridge landing. Police have registered a case against the accused driver for causing death by negligence and rash driving.Navghar police said according to the complaint lodged by Shrikant Shinde, an 18-year-old student from Kalbadevi, the accident took place on April 29, when he was riding a scooter along with Sunil Pisal from Mulund East towards Byculla.Police said Pisal, who worked as a senior officer with Gyandeep Patsanstha, had attended a convention organised by the institution in Mulund East. Since Shinde’s mother, employed with the same organisation, was unwell, Shinde had accompanied Pisal to the event.Police said at around 5.30pm, shortly after descending the Airoli Bridge on the southbound arm of the Eastern Express Highway, a four-wheeler allegedly being driven at high speed rammed into the left side of the scooter.The impact caused both riders to fall. Shinde sustained injuries to both hands, while Pisal suffered severe head injuries. They were initially rushed to Adi Arogya Hospital in Kannamwar Nagar, Vikhroli East, by the driver of the car and bystanders present at the spot.Pisal was later shifted to Jaslok Hospital at Peddar Road for advanced treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries on May 20.The complainant alleged that the accident occurred due to rash and negligent driving by the driver of the four-wheeler, identified as Pandurang Sawant, who was allegedly driving vehicle. Further investigation is underway.
