Pune: An assistant sales manager (32) of a private firm dealing in shipping containers jumped to death from Lion’s Point near Lonavla, about 70km from the city, in the early hours of Thursday — the birthday of his wife.A team from Shivdurga Mitra, Lonavla, brought the body up from the 250ft deep gorge and handed it over to police. Inspector Dinesh Tayade of the Lonavla Rural police said, “The man, a resident of Hinjewadi in Pune, was under stress over ongoing arguments with his wife. She left home and has been in Mumbai since Feb 10. Thursday was her birthday. When she did not respond to his calls, he created a video and sent it to her through email. He also sent a text message to one of his friends before ending his life.”

Tayade said the victim mentioned in the video names of three men and five women, with whom he had some issues. “We have registered a case under Section 108 (suicide abetment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The man’s wife lodged a complaint,” he said.The officer said the victim worked as a sales manager for the past few months with a Pune-based company dealing in renting and selling shipping containers. Recently, he argued with his wife over a personal issue. His wife subsequently left home and allegedly blocked his cellphone number.“The assistant sales manager tried to call his wife on her birthday on Thursday. When he could not establish contact with her, he recorded a video and mailed it to her. He sent a message to a friend also,” police inspector Tayade said.He said the victim’s wife and friend approached the police in the morning after getting the email and the text message, respectively. The man mentioned in the message that his car was parked near Lion’s Point. The police found it there. The car’s key was kept under the tyre. The police also found the man’s cellphone inside the car. “We immediately informed the Shivdurga Mitra team to trace the man in the gorge,” Tayade said.Sunil Gaikwad of Shivdurga Mitra, Lonavla, said his team members traced the man’s body about 250ft down in the gorge. “They went down with a stretcher and brought the body up around 4.30pm,” Gaikwad said.Inspector Tayade said the man mentioned names of his office colleagues, with whom he had some personal issues. “Our investigations are on,” he said.
