Jhansi: A joint team of Nawabad police and SOG team conducted an encounter operation on Tuesday morning, arresting a 29-year-old man, accused of operating a full-fledged IPL betting racket with the help of eight other associates who are still absconding. The police also froze Rs 25 lakh cash deposited in 13 different bank accounts of the accused.SSP Jhansi, BBGTS Murthy, said that the accused, Vivek Yadav, who belongs to the Babina area, tried to escape and fired at the police personnel but was overpowered and arrested.The cops also recovered a gun, four mobile phones and other peripherals used in betting.During interrogation, the accused revealed that he was operating the racket with the help of around eight associates and more than half a dozen websites, whose main operator was himself. Police, while scanning his mobile phones, also found virtual coins worth around Rs 1.57 crore.“The accused is also in possession of properties worth Rs 70 lakh, which will also be attached very soon under the Gangster Act,” SSP Murthy said.“During investigations of the accused’s backward and forward channel, around eight names have surfaced, maximum from nearby areas and one from Varanasi, who will also be arrested soon. We are committed to wipe off such organised betting rackets,” he added.The absconding accused have been identified as Satyendra Yadav, Dharmendra Sahu, Ankit Yadav, Nilesh Yadav and Kuldeep Diwakar from various places in Jhansi, Nishant Yadav alias Rolex, Arun Yadav from Daitya, and Harsh Sahu from Varanasi.
