Ahmedabad: A 37-year-old man was apprehended by Chandkheda police on Saturday night for allegedly placing online bets during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 match between South Africa and New Zealand, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera.The accused was caught while police personnel were on patrol inside the stadium to keep watch on illegal betting activities during high-profile matches. According to police officials, acting on a tip-off, around 10.15pm, a team from LCB-2, Zone 2, reached the South Premium West stand, Bay-03, Seat No. 30, where the suspect was seated. He was allegedly found using his mobile phone to place live bets on the ongoing match through an online platform.The accused was identified as Suresh Sencha (37), a resident of Pali district in Rajasthan. During questioning, he admitted to logging into a betting website using an online ID and wagering on the live match. Police said the betting account was accessed through a web browser on his mobile phone. Officers escorted the accused out of the stand to avoid disturbing spectators and conducted further inquiry in the presence of panch witnesses. A mobile phone, valued at Rs 10,000, was seized along with screenshots of the betting account activity.
