Rourkela: A 28-year-old man was arrested on Sunday allegedly for attempting to kill a woman by pouring petrol on her and setting her on fire. The accused, Rajat Kiro is a resident under Kinjrikela police station limits of Sundargarh district.Anju Toppo (27) of Jaratola village in Santoshpur panchayat under Bisra police station limits was sleeping in a room at her house on Friday while her family members were sleeping in another room. Around 11.30 pm on Friday, Rajat poured petrol into her room through the window before setting it alight. When she cried for help, her family members and locals rescued her. She is under treatment in a hospital here. Her condition is critical as she sustained more than 40% burn injuries.Police said, Rajat came in contact with her through social media about eight months ago. He proposed marriage to her but she refused, leading to this incident. On Saturday, Bisra police went to A’s house, examined her room and conducted a detailed inquiry.

Based on the FIR, Bisra police registered an attempt-to-murder case on Saturday and launched an investigation. Rajat was nabbed on Saturday night and was interrogated. On Sunday, he was arrested for trying to kill the woman. “The accused in this case has been arrested, and further investigation into this case is underway,” said Manoranjan Kumbhar, inspector in charge, Bisra police station.
