COIMBATORE: A 53-year-old vegetable seller died in Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Monday night after he was assaulted by his wife during a drunken quarrel near Sirumugai in Coimbatore district.The deceased has been identified as K Chenniappan, 53, of Periyur in Palathottam. He was selling vegetables on a pushcart. His wife, Pushpalatha, 47, also sold vegetables using a pushcart. The couple have two sons.According to police sources, on July 17 night, Chenniappan, who was in an inebriated state, went to his wife’s vegetable pushcart, picked up a fight with her and assaulted her. Enraged, Pushpalatha picked up a log from the ground and struck him on the head.Chenniappan, who sustained severe head injuries, was rushed to Mettupalayam govt hospital. Later, he transferred to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for further treatment. However, he died on Monday night without responding to treatment.The Sirumugai police registered a case and arrested Pushpalatha.
