Patna: A 22-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death in the Halai police station area of Samastipur district after he objected to vulgar Bhojpuri songs being played on a DJ during a wedding procession. The incident occurred in Ward 9 of Banveera panchayat on Thursday night. The deceased was identified as Vijay Kumar Pandit, son of govt school teacher Gopal Pandit.According to Vijay’s mother, Veena Kumari, an anganwadi worker, the incident took place during the wedding of Sannny Kumar, son of Sagar Rai.Veena alleged Vijay objected to the vulgar songs, triggering an altercation. Family members claimed the accused then brutally assaulted him. They alleged that a chain and cellphone were snatched during the attack and that his neck was also pressed during the scuffle.Relatives rushed to the spot and brought the injured Vijay home. His condition deteriorated soon afterwards, following which he was taken to a private hospital in Jandaha, Vaishali district, where doctors declared him dead.Following Vijay’s death, angry family members and villagers blocked NH-322 with the body from around 1am to 4am on Friday. The blockade was lifted after police intervention.After the postmortem, villagers placed the body at the main gate of Halai police station and staged a protest for nearly two hours. They demanded the immediate arrest of the accused, strict action against those involved and compensation for the bereaved family.Based on a complaint lodged by Veena Kumari, Halai police registered an FIR against 11 named and 15 unidentified people.SHO Shailesh Kumar said a case had been registered and the investigation was underway. “All aspects are being probed and further legal action is being taken,” he said.Vijay’s father, Gopal Pandit, is a teacher at a govt school in Sitamarhi. Vijay worked outside Bihar and had returned home only a few days ago.
