Chennai: A burglar was arrested by the Rajamangalam police for breaking into a locked house in Kolathur and stealing gold jewellery and other valuables. Police recovered two gold chains weighing three sovereigns, worth ₹4 lakh, and seized the two-wheeler used in the crime.The complainant, G. Muthusubramani, 48, a railway technician working in Andhra Pradesh, locked his house in Kolathur and left for his sister’s residence in Thiruvottiyur along with his wife, children and father on May 26When Muthusubramani returned home with his family on May 31, they found that the front door lock and two wardrobes had been broken. Gold jewellery weighing six sovereigns, including chains, earrings, ear-chain ornaments and nose studs, along with brass articles, was stolen.Based on Muthusubramani’s complaint, the Rajamangalam Crime Wing Police registered a case, and they analysed CCTV footage from the neighbourhood.The investigation led to the arrest of Sanjay alias Karthik, 22, of Kolathur, on Wednesday. Police said the accused travelled to the house on a scooter, broke open the locks and stole the valuables.During interrogation, police found that Sanjay sold the stolen jewellery, used part of the proceeds to buy two new gold chains and spent the remaining money. Police recovered the two gold chains weighing three sovereigns, valued at ₹4 lakh, and seized the two-wheeler used in the offence.Further investigation revealed that the accused had one previous crime case registered against him. He was produced before a court on Wednesday and remanded in judicial custody.
