Kalyani: Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra appeared before Nadia Police on Friday afternoon in connection with a hate speech case.Moitra reached Hogalberia police station around 2 pm and left about an hour later. She met the investigating officer as directed by Calcutta High Court.On July 21, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya had asked Moitra to cooperate with the probe and appear in person before the officer on Aug 14. The court also gave her interim protection from any coercive police action till Oct 5, on the condition that she cooperates with the investigation and responds to police notices.The case relates to comments Moitra made at a news conference in Nadia in Aug 2025 while speaking about infiltration along the India-Bangladesh border. Her remarks about Union home minister Amit Shah led to a political row. Complaints were filed in different places, alleging that her comments were objectionable and unconstitutional.Moitra has maintained that her words were figurative and based on a Bengali idiom. She has argued that she was seeking accountability and had no intention of encouraging violence.After the Hogalberia case was filed, Moitra moved HC to quash the case and protect her from coercive action. The state told the court that she had earlier failed to appear despite notices.Moitra also moved Supreme Court, seeking permission to appear virtually. On Aug 7, the court refused to hear the plea, and she withdrew it.
