Mumbai: Maharashtra nodal cyber police have arrested two of 22 foreign medical degree holders for allegedly obtaining registration with Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) using forged documents despite not clearing the mandatory Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). TOI was first to report the scam on Aug 28.FMGE is mandatory for Indian citizens and overseas citizens of India who hold a primary medical degree from a foreign country and wish to practise in India. It is regulated by National Medical Commission and conducted by National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences.The arrested students have been identified as Varun Akhade (28) and Sanket Unhale (26), both from Buldhana district. Police have also named 19 others as wanted accused in the case. They allegedly accessed Maharashtra Medical Council’s online portal without authorisation, created login profiles and uploaded forged or altered documents to obtain registration.Maharashtra Medical Council had lodged a complaint on Aug 7 after noticing discrepancies in the documents in the online profiles of some foreign medical graduates. The candidates had reportedly obtained their medical degrees from foreign countries but had not cleared FMGE screening examination conducted by National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), which is mandatory for foreign medical graduates seeking registration to practise medicine in India.Police said the accused did not provide satisfactory information about the preparation of the documents, financial transactions involved, or the credit card allegedly used to access the portal. The accused were produced before the court which remanded them to four days’ police custody.
