Nagpur: The Maharashtra govt last week approved the institution of the ‘C-60 Service Medal’ for personnel serving in the Special Operations Squad (C-60). Starting from 2026-27, the DGP will announce the medal recipients’ names on the eve of Maharashtra Day, May 1.The C-60 squad was established on December 1, 1990, with an initial strength of just 60 personnel to counter armed Maoist activities in the state. Today, it operates with 29 squads in Gadchiroli district (28 personnel each) and nine squads in Gondia district (20 personnel each), said an official. These highly trained commandos conduct area domination, long-range and short-range patrolling, and intelligence-based operations in dense forests, mountainous terrain, rivers and streams under extremely adverse weather conditions.Over the years, C-60 personnel have demonstrated exceptional bravery, earning 320 Police Gallantry Medals, six President’s Gallantry Medals, eight Meritorious Service Medals and two Shaurya Chakras. The new medal follows pattern of special service medals awarded to Force One and Quick Response Team members.Former and serving members need 2 consecutive years of service as officers or 3 years as Amaldars in the squad, plus an outstanding record in last 5 years. Up to 500 medals will be distributed annually for first 2 years; from the 3rd year, only deserving candidates will receive them.
