Guwahati: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday visited historic Madhupur Satra in Cooch Behar, West Bengal, and announced a plan to develop the site into a major religious tourism centre in partnership with the newly elected BJP govt in the state.Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev spent his final days at Madhupur Satra, which holds deep significance in the Assamese Vaishnavite tradition as the site of his Mahasamadhi.Describing the Satra as “the very soul of our Vaishnavite heritage,” Sarma said in a series of posts on X that the development would honour the sanctity of the Satra and take Sankardev’s message to a new generation.“The great Mahapurush Shri Shri Shankaradev spent the final days of his life at the Shri Shri Madhupur Satra located in Cooch Behar, West Bengal. Just as we have developed his birthplace Batadrawa, in the same way, we will, in collaboration with the Govt of West Bengal, bestow a grand form upon his Mahasamadhi site, the Madhupur Satra,” Sarma wrote on X.Sarma said the change in West Bengal’s political equation had made the long-pending plan possible.“Right now, there is a strong double-engine government in West Bengal and now you will see how rapidly the state develops. For so many years, Didi (Mamata Banerjee) did not give me the opportunity to come here, and today, two ministers of the Bengal government are also present with me in this sacred session,” he said.
