Chennai: Summer is not yet here, and the city’s reservoir position is comfortable, yet more than 10,000 residents in wards 29 and 30 of Madhavaram are already facing water scarcity due to the lack of proper piped water infrastructure. Their long-pending demand for regular water supply remains unfulfilled. As of now, piped water is supplied only to a few localities such as Devaki Nagar, Majestic Colony, Gowri Colony, Thirupathi Thangavel Nagar, and Thanigai Nagar. According to Metrowater, 1,237MLD of water is supplied to the 15 zones under the corporation limits. Currently, the city’s reservoirs together have 10TMC of water.D Neelakannan, president of alliance of residents welfare associations, said, “for years, residents have been asking the department to inspect areas such as Thirumalai Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Munusamy Nagar, Balakrishna Nagar, and Thanigachalam E Block, where Metrowater works were not completed,” he said.“During monsoon, Metrowater often carries out underground drainage and water supply works, leaving roads and residential streets dug up. Now is the ideal time for them to complete the pending works,” he said. Residents in these areas are dependent on private water tankers and Metrowater lorries. Many said they repeatedly submitted complaints to the Metrowater requesting pipeline connections, but the issue has not been addressed.Metrowater officials said: “In 2025, we gave a total of 49,000 connections around the corporation limits. In areas such as Madhavaram and its proximity, the works are carried out at a faster pace. By the end of this year, the entire area will be covered.”
