Kolkata: Two accidents, which cops suspected happened due to skidding, were reported on the Maa Flyover-Ultadanga Bypass stretch on Tuesday morning. In the first accident, a 21-year-old biker lost his life, while his 49-year-old father was stated to be critical. According to police, the accident took place around 8.35 am when the biker, Sagnik Dutta, a resident of Nimta, lost control of his bike near the Hyatt Crossing on the EM Bypass. Both of them were rushed to Apollo Hospital, where Sagnik was declared dead.“It seems that Sagnik suddenly applied the brakes but lost control of the 2-wheeler. It then skidded. However, cops are not clear about the sequence since no CCTV footage clearly captured the accident. Sagnik received multiple injuries, including those to internal organs,” said cops.“The survivor, who has injuries to his right hand and shoulders, is in severe trauma after losing his son in the accident. We need to give him time to recover before we speak to him,” said an officer. In the second incident, an Army truck plying on Maa and moving towards Park Circus in the rain jumped the road divider and finally stopped in the opposite lane. The accident took place a little after 6.30 am. Cops suspected that the driver could not control the truck as it skidded in the rain near the Boat Club. While the driver received injuries, the flyover was shut for more than 35 minutes as the truck had to be towed to Seven Point Crossing at Park Circus. The accident left several students in the lurch as detours were introduced. “As it was raining, traffic was slower than usual. With Maa Flyover shut, students had problems reaching their schools, especially since the final exam season began,” said an officer from Tiljala Traffic Guard.
