Kolkata: The 114-year-old Loreto College planned to introduce commerce in its curriculum, teacher-in-charge Sister Nirmala said during the Foundation Day celebration on Tuesday.Confirming that the college had applied for autonomous status, a move designed to modernise its curriculum and evaluation systems, Sister Nirmala said the institute, which currently offered courses in arts and science, planned to introduce commerce in addition to a BBA programme, MA in political science, data science and computer science, as well as a course in geographic information systems (GIS) from the next academic year. “All these are in the pipeline as we are waiting for the college autonomy permission from the UGC. We applied for it at the end of Jan. Once we receive the autonomous status for the college, we will start working on the plans,” she said.

Loreto College, one of the city’s premier institutes for women’s education, celebrated its 114th Foundation Day on Monday, themed ‘Rooted in Tradition: Reaching for Excellence’. The college was founded on Feb 2, 1912. “Once Loreto College becomes autonomous, we will hold the convocation on Feb 2,” she said.
