Baramulla, Sept 16: Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and senior BJP leader Sunil Sharma on Wednesday interacted with people in Baramulla as part of the party’s pre-session outreach programme, saying the opposition would raise public grievances during the upcoming Assembly session.
Sharma said the BJP legislative group had decided to visit district headquarters across Jammu and Kashmir ahead of the session to hear people’s concerns and take up issues requiring government intervention.
“A lot of people have come from North Kashmir with their issues. Our legislative group has decided that before this Assembly session, we will go to every district headquarters and listen to the problems of the people,” Sharma said while speaking to reporters.
He said the Baramulla programme was intended to hear grievances from different sections of society and described the exercise as non political.
“We have come here to listen to the problems of the people and raise them in the concerned quarters,” he said.
On the issues the opposition plans to raise in the Assembly, Sharma alleged that corruption and unemployment had become major concerns in Jammu and Kashmir.
He also raised issues concerning outsourced employment, municipal elections, electricity charges, NHM workers, Anganwadi workers and other sections of society.
“The opposition has to raise the voices of the poor. Especially now, corruption has crossed many levels. Unemployed youth are in distress because they are being deprived of jobs in the name of outsourcing,” he alleged.
Sharma further claimed that the absence of municipal elections had affected development and investment at the grassroots level, while increased electricity charges had added to the burden on people.
He said the BJP, as the principal opposition party, would take up these matters during the Assembly session.
“The BJP is the principal opposition party. We will raise these issues in the Assembly,” Sharma said.
Regarding the grievances brought before him in Baramulla, Sharma said most of the concerns were related to basic governance and civic amenities, including roads, bridges, water supply and tourism-related matters.
“All these problems are related to governance. There are small issues some about the bridge, some about the road, some about tourism, some about water. Basic amenities are related to all these issues,” he said.
The Baramulla visit comes ahead of the upcoming Assembly session, with the BJP indicating that issues related to governance, employment and civic infrastructure will remain among its key areas of focus.
