LTimes News NetworkKanpur: Throughout the nation, Independence Day is typically celebrated at dawn with the hoisting of the national flag but in the city’s Meston Road area, the festivities begin at 1 am with a flag-hoisting ceremony. Upholding this tradition, the Independence Day celebrations in the industrial city will once again commence at midnight with the unfurling of the national flag at the Beech Wala Chowk Mandir on Meston Road.The city has a long-standing custom of hoisting the national flag just after midnight as the new day dawns. “Although the nation gained its freedom at midnight on August 14, 1947, and people across the country celebrate Independence Day by hoisting the national tricolor well after sunrise on August 15, the tradition of raising the national flag at 00:01 hours on August 15 has been maintained in this industrial city,” stated Badri Mishra, s ocial activist.“Residents have been commemorating this event since August 14, 1947. The Beech Wala Chowk Mandir on Meston Road served as a pivotal location during the freedom movement in the area. “Freedom fighters would gather at Beech Wala Chowk Mandir to hear speeches from prominent leaders of the movement,” said Mishra.
