Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad has moved a step closer to developing the proposed Sardar Patel Sports Enclave after the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) cleared land by changing the land-use of reserved plots in Sabarmati and Koteshwar town planning (TP) schemes. The sports enclave, estimated to cost Rs 5,050 crore, is planned around the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera and is expected to serve as the main venue for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, while also strengthening the city’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.According to AMC officials, a total of 14.51 lakh sq m of land was earmarked for the mega sports complex. The land comprises 4.23 lakh sq m from the Sabarmati Riverfront, 3.53 lakh sq m owned by the AMC, 6.72 lakh sq m of govt land, besides a plot belonging to the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation. Officials said all these land parcels have now been finalised. The civic body will soon submit plans for the sports infrastructure proposed within the enclave for approval to the govt. While most of the required land has been secured, authorities still need to acquire one privately owned plot, and a case related to reclaiming govt land leased to the Asaram Ashram remains pending before a court. As part of the land assembly process, the AMC administrator approved a proposal in the standing committee meeting on March 20 to change the purpose of four plots in Sabarmati TP Scheme No. 23. The plots, originally reserved for gardens, urban forests and other public uses, have been redesignated as “social infrastructure”, making them available for construction. An AMC official said the fourth variation in Sabarmati TP Scheme No. 23 was approved, changing the land use of four plots with a combined area of 56,845 sq m to social infrastructure.“Since construction is not permitted on land reserved for gardens or urban forests, the change in land use will enable these plots to be utilised for the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave. The process of allotting the plots for the project will now begin,” the official said.He added that the process of changing the land use of a plot in Koteshwar TP Scheme No. 48 was completed and the proposal will soon be placed before the town planning committee for approval.Sources said a majority of the land surrounding the Narendra Modi Stadium was already owned by the govt and falls within Sabarmati TP Scheme No. 23 and Koteshwar-Motera TP Scheme No. 48. They added that only one privately owned plot falls within the proposed sports enclave, and its acquisition will be handled by the district collector’s office.
