Shillong: East Khasi Hills police arrested Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) assistant organising secretary Jeremiah Pohthmi on Monday over the Aug 19 rally violence.Pohthmi was arrested in Nongmynsong and remanded to judicial custody. Police earlier arrested KSU’s president, vice-president and general secretary.“The accused is one of the masked men whom the police have identified and arrested. The SIT headed by the IG (law and order) is confident of arresting others involved,” East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem told the media.In compliance with Meghalaya high court’s Aug 20 order, the state govt on Monday submitted a status report on steps taken.A division bench of justices HS Thangkhiew and W Diengdoh noted that two high court vehicles were attacked and a PSO and driver were assaulted. It directed the state to produce the case diary and said all such cases, including the attack on a public transport bus, should receive “the same expeditious consideration”.The matter was listed for Sept 1.
