Chennai: Upgradation of the five-decades-old Metrowater pipelines through MLA or smart city funds, preventing untreated sewage from draining into Adyar river and widening of roads to reduce traffic congestion along key stretches are among the demands of Kotturpuram residents this election.Locals from areas, including Kottur Gardens, Lake View Road and Surya Nagar, have met a few contesting candidates and party representatives, sharing their demands. A common concern was the need for traffic signals/personnel at crucial junctions, including Kottur Gardens and the intersection of Pondicherry Road and Ellaiamman Koil Street. “The govt can also consider constructing a road under the Kotturpuram bridge for about 2,000-odd families who will soon occupy the new housing board tenements. This will allow them to reach Gandhi Mandapam Road without much hassle,” said Visalakshi N, a resident.Another concern that needs to be addressed is the mosquito menace, triggered by non-functional pumping station near Kottur Urban Forest, residents said. Further, there have been complaints of poor drainage along roads adjoining Karunanidhi Street since the new stormwater drain work began several months ago. “The govt should also take steps to prevent untreated sewage draining into Adyar river, which overflows along the roads,” said Rajagopal, executive committee member, Kottur Gardens residents association. The residents have also sought safe and well-preserved EB distribution boxes and cables, removal of unused cables lying on platforms and roads and relocation of electrical poles on platforms and roads.
