Kolkata: Two exclusive special NIA courts were inaugurated on City Session Court premises on Tuesday by Acting Chief Justice (ACJ) Tapabrata Chakrabarty for “expeditious trial” of NIA cases where regular bail is often restricted due to stringent statutory checks. The ACJ said, “A swift trial is the ultimate safeguard for personal liberty and public confidence.”The ACJ said the Supreme Court recognised the cases under specialised enactments, most notably the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and NDPS Act, involving complex and sensitive trials.Highlighting that since judicial officers are burdened with regular cases, these “sensitive trials inevitably suffer from piecemeal hearings and systematic delay”. He stressed these cases demand “undivided continuous judicial focus”.
