Times News NetworkKanpur: Kidney transplants will start soon at Lala Lajpat Rai Super Speciality Hospital of GSVM Medical College in Kanpur as the hospital administration has received official approval for the procedure.Principal Dr Sanjay Kala said permission was received from the govt on Tuesday. He said that the govt has directed that the list of transplant cases carried out in the hospital every month be sent to the Directorate General and SOTTO (State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization) nodal officer Dr R. Harshvardhan.Work has begun for operating a separate OPD in the hospital. In this OPD, apart from patients, donors will be registered, and only the kidney of the suitable donor will be taken. Counselling of the patient’s family members will also be done, and it will be decided whether they can donate a kidney. After this, the family members and donor will have to take permission from District Authorization Committee.Keeping in mind complex operations like kidney transplant and post-operative care, Hallet’s nursing and paramedical staff are currently in SGPGI Lucknow for special training. This team will complete its training by September and return to Kanpur. As soon as the staff return, the transplant unit will start working with full capacity and efficiency.In the hospital, apart from Head of Department Dr Yuvraj Gulati and Dr Sameer Govil, 4 urologists have already received training. The principal said that they are preparing to perform first transplant in September as soon as the special staff arrive and a suitable donor is found.The hospital administration will also prepare an outline of the expenses involved in the transplant. At present, the cost of a transplant in SGPGI is Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. Apart from this, help is also available for surgery, admission and other expenses from the Ayushman card, MLA fund, CM or PM fund.
