Words of wisdomOdisha transport commissioner and IPS officer Amitabh Thakur recently reminded social media that life’s toughest lessons don’t come from maths textbooks. His post pointed out that while “price” and “worth” may sound alike, “priceless” and “worthless” sit at opposite ends of the spectrum. The message struck a chord online, especially in an age when followers, likes and valuations are measured daily. As many would agree, the most valuable things in life often come without a price tag.Delay bonusThere’s a saying that when two rivals fight, a third person often walks away with the prize. Odisha’s in-charge DGP Vinaytosh Mishra seems to fit the bill perfectly. Never really in the race for the top post due to his Nov retirement, Mishra found himself in the corner office after a tussle over the DGP appointment landed in court. Now, with the selection of a regular police chief stuck in limbo, every adjournment effectively extends his innings. What was meant to be a stopgap stint is turning into a rather comfortable run at the top.One-sided matchA fare dispute escalated into an ego duel at Bhubaneswar’s Master Canteen Square. Miffed over the govt’s silence, app-based drivers blocked roads, clashed with police and vandalised property. The police, equally unimpressed by flying stones, responded with lathis, arrests, vehicle seizures and even a bulldozer visit to the taxi stand. The scoreline was lopsided. As a social media user quipped, “The drivers picked the fight, but ended up on the back foot in this battle of egos.”(Contributed by Team TOI)
