Wednesday, March 18

Intermittent rain in the plains and fresh snowfall in the higher reaches brought back a winter chill across Kashmir on Wednesday, officials said.

A Meteorological Department official said a fresh western disturbance is active over the region, leading to widespread cloud cover and precipitation.

The higher reaches, including Gulmarg and Sonamarg, received fresh snowfall, while the plains, including Srinagar, witnessed intermittent drizzle.

“The current weather pattern is due to a western disturbance. Generally cloudy conditions with light rain at most places and isolated heavy falls are likely over the next 24 hours,” the official said.

The fresh spell of precipitation led to a drop in day temperatures, which stayed below normal for this time of the season.

Officials said the wet spell has brought relief to farmers and orchardists as it is crucial for maintaining soil moisture ahead of upcoming agricultural activities.

Authorities have advised travellers to exercise caution on roads in higher reaches due to slippery conditions caused by snowfall.

The Meteorological Department has forecast generally unstable weather till March 20, with gradual improvement thereafter.(KNS)
