Bengaluru: A 50-year-old man, detained by police with a few others on alleged charges of gambling, died of suspected cardiac arrest inside Huliyar police station in Tumakuru district Thursday night.The deceased is Kantaraju S, a resident of Yalanadu and an agriculturist. According to the protestors, police detained six men after accusing them of playing cards and brought them to the station for questioning around 8pm. After taking statements from them, they were let off by 9pm. Then, Kantaraju, who was seen on CCTV sitting near the steps of the station entrance, collapsed.“He was shifted in the police vehicle to a nearby private hospital where he died. The family members and others brought the body to the station and placed it inside, accusing police of torture. We convinced them of a detailed inquiry and shifted the body to the govt hospital later in the night. The doctors at the private hospital opine it to be a case of cardiac arrest. However, a judicial inquest was carried out today (Friday) and we are awaiting the autopsy report,” a senior IPS officer told TOI, adding, “The entire episode has been recorded in the CCTV fitted in and around the police station. However, the case has been handed over to criminal investigation department.”In the presence of local police led by senior IPS officers, Kantaraju’s last rites were performed Friday evening.
