Bengaluru: Attendance of around 72% students is now being recorded to the new facial recognition app introduced by the department of school education and literacy.As per the department’s latest data, around 35.2 lakh students across govt and aided schools are to be registered on the platform, Niranthara. Of this, nearly 3.2 lakh students were registered. As of July 20, 2.3 lakh students, accounting to 72.4%, are actively recording their daily attendance using the app.Nirantara was introduced to provide accurate daily attendance of schoolchildren, identify absentees and ensure transparency in implementation of student-focused programmes. “There is still a difference in number of students enrolled in Student Achievement Tracking System (SATS) and Nirantara.

The system is also expected to track the number of students opting for schemes like eggs in midday meals.The app is available on teachers’ mobile phones. They will have to click a photo of the class and the app identifies students and registers their attendance.Employees of the department are using another mobile application called KAAMS-Kartavya. About 99% of workforce has successfully registered on the application. On July 23, 81.5% of employees logged their daily attendance using Kartavya app, the department said.
