Jhansi: Kargil Vijay Diwas was observed with solemnity and patriotic fervour here on Sunday, as district officials, ex-servicemen, war widows, NCC cadets and citizens gathered at the District Soldiers’ Welfare and Rehabilitation Office to pay homage to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives in the 1999 Kargil War.District magistrate Gaurang Rathi, who was the chief guest at the ceremony, paid floral tributes at the Shaheed Smarak and honoured the memory of the fallen heroes. Addressing the gathering, he said the sacrifices made by soldiers in defence of the nation would continue to inspire future generations towards patriotism and national service. He described Kargil Vijay Diwas as a symbol of the indomitable courage, valour and determination of India’s Armed Forces, adding that the nation would forever remain indebted to its brave sons.

The programme was conducted under the supervision of District Soldiers’ Welfare and Rehabilitation Officer Commander Mahesh Kumar Srivastava and Subedar Sanjay Kumar Shukla. As part of the event, a plantation drive was also organised under the nationwide campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” (A Tree in Mother’s Name). The district magistrate and other dignitaries planted saplings and appealed to citizens to actively contribute to environmental conservation by planting more trees and ensuring their upkeep.The ceremony witnessed the participation of a large number of veterans, including representatives of the Uttar Pradesh Ex-Servicemen Organisation, senior retired defence personnel, Veer Naris, NCC cadets and members of Azad Hind Fauj associations.The participants offered floral tributes to the martyrs and reaffirmed their commitment to preserving the legacy of the nation’s armed forces. The programme concluded with the singing of the national anthem.
