New Delhi: Public Works Department (PWD) has initiated the next step towards two major elevated road projects by inviting consultancy services to conduct feasibility studies for proposed corridors over the Karawal Nagar drain from Ankur Enclave to Gokalpur metro station and along Guru Harkishan Marg (road no. 43) from Britannia Chowk to Outer Ring Road via Shakur Basti railway station.The studies will determine the technical viability of the projects and lay the groundwork for future construction, and will cost around Rs 3.2 crore.The proposed elevated corridor over the Karawal Nagar drain is aimed at easing congestion in one of northeast Delhi’s most densely populated stretches. The road, which connects localities such as Karawal Nagar, Gokalpur, Sonia Vihar and Dayalpur, frequently witnesses traffic snarls because of its narrow carriageway, mixed traffic and dense roadside development.If found feasible, the elevated road is expected to provide uninterrupted connectivity towards Gokalpuri metro station, reduce travel time for commuters heading towards central Delhi and serve as an alternate north-south corridor in the trans-Yamuna region.The second proposal targets Guru Harkishan Marg between Britannia Chowk and the Outer Ring Road, one of northwest Delhi’s busiest traffic corridors. Britannia Chowk handles traffic from Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, GT Karnal Road, Lawrence Road and Shakurpur, making it a major congestion point during peak hours.An elevated road along this stretch could allow through traffic to bypass multiple signals, reducing delays while improving connectivity across northwest Delhi. The proposal also aligns with the PWD’s broader plan to develop signal-free corridors on heavily trafficked routes..
