Kanpur: A 30-year-old Anwarganj man was arrested after a Thai woman (25) accused him of concealing his marital status, marrying her and cheating her of about 20 lakh baht (Rs 60 lakh), police said on Tuesday.In a complaint submitted to ADCP East Shiva Singh, the woman alleged that Irfan, a resident of Latouche Road, pressured her to move permanently to India and convert her religion when she sought repayment.Singh said a police team was immediately sent and Irfan was apprehended. As the matter falls under Anwarganj police station, the case was forwarded there and the investigation was handed over to ACP Anwarganj. The man has been arrested after investigation, said Singh.According to the complainant, she met Irfan on Instagram about four years ago. He visited Thailand frequently and proposed marriage without disclosing that he was already married.The two married according to Thai customs about one-and-a-half years ago, she alleged. Irfan then started seeking money from her for business and took about 20 lakh baht from her in over seven to eight months.The woman said that a few days ago she came to know that Irfan was already married. When she demanded her money back, Irfan allegedly said that he would accept her as his wife only if she moved to India and converted her religion and then only he would discuss repayment of the money, she said.Police said that Irfan could not provide a satisfactory response when questioned over the complaint.
