Kanpur: Railway Protection Force has drafted proposal to install face recognition system (FRS) cameras at Kanpur Central Railway Station to boost security. The proposal will be submitted to the division. The cameras can help detect crime suspects entering or leaving the station and send alerts, facilitating their arrest. The system was to be monitored from a control room at the RPF post. Currently, there are 140 CCTV cameras installed at the railway station, covering the premises and surrounding areas, all monitored from the RPF post’s control room. To upgrade the system, FRS cameras have been planned for installation at entry and exit points on City and Cantt sides of the station, as well as at other key locations. The smart cameras can identify suspects and criminals, promptly notifying the control room. Criminals disguised as passengers entering or exiting the station would also be detected. FRS cameras would maintain criminal database, tracking individuals as soon as they are identified. A criminal’s face would reveal their past offences on the computer, enabling RPF to apprehend them. The cameras would feature video analytics and infrared technology for clear footage even in low light. Recently, in major cities, these cameras have helped catch criminals at railway stations. At Kanpur Central Station, the cameras are expected to monitor unauthorised entry points that are presently accessible. A proposal was drafted and submitted to the division for installing FRS-equipped cameras, and upon approval, installation would commence, stated Vivek Verma, RPF assistant security commissioner.
