Guwahati: The Kamrup (Metro) district administration has directed authorities to carry out periodic inspections of Guwahati’s newly built flyovers, including the Maharaja Prithu Flyover, during the monsoon to ensure commuter safety and prevent accidents.The directive was issued by Kamrup (Metro) deputy commissioner Swapnil Paul while chairing a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee on Saturday.The DC asked officials to regularly inspect the Noonmati-Dighalipukhuri connecting Maharaja Prithu Flyover and maintain close vigil to ensure that rain-related issues do not pose any risk to motorists. Similar inspections have also been ordered for other recently constructed flyovers in the city.He also instructed concerned departments to immediately address open manholes in different parts of the city, which pose hazards to commuters during the monsoon.The meeting reviewed the implementation of decisions taken in the previous Road Safety Committee meeting and discussed measures to reduce road accidents and fatalities in the city. Paul urged all stakeholder departments, including the public works department, transport department, traffic police, health department and other agencies, to discharge their responsibilities effectively to improve road safety.Officials discussed traffic management around Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), restoration of roads dug up by utility agencies, regulation of green buses and action against bars operating without valid licences.District transport officer Himanshu Kumar Das said the transport department would intensify enforcement against drink driving and take additional road safety measures in the coming days. He appealed to motorists to follow traffic rules and comply with the Motor Vehicles Act provisions.
