Nagpur: Motorists seeking refuge from Saturday’s rain under the newly built Kamptee double-decker flyover ended up getting drenched as water cascaded through the structure, raising questions about the quality of construction and drainage planning on the corridor.“I stopped under the flyover, but water started falling directly from the structure. So I had to move my vehicle out into the rain,” said Kuldeep Bawa, a motorist who encountered the leakage.“Crores of our taxes are spent to make such ginormous flyovers, but something as basic as a proper drainage system is ignored,” said another motorist, Ajay Mahajan.Charan Kumar, a bike taxi rider, said: “Water falling from the flyover is distracting. It becomes hard to ride with a customer riding pillion. We get bad reviews from customers when we suddenly swerve or stop.”MahaMetro acknowledged the issue and said it was examining the water seepage and drainage-related concerns. A team of officials will also inspect the site for blockages in the drains and clear them.A similar problem had earlier been reported on the Wardha Road double-decker corridor, where rainwater was seen leaking through the flyover onto the road below.According to MahaMetro sources, the agency has since revised the rainwater harvesting design planned for Metro Phase-2. Instead of exposed drainage pipes, rainwater in the Phase-2 corridor will be routed through PVC pipelines concealed within Metro piers and discharged into specially designed recharge zones beneath median flower beds.The redesigned system will also incorporate filter media to keep silt from entering the recharge structures, while cleaning taps will allow maintenance teams to flush out accumulated debris and reduce the risk of blockages.These measures are intended to ensure more efficient rainwater collection and groundwater recharge, while preventing the kind of seepage and uncontrolled discharge reported at some locations on the existing network.
