Dibrugarh: Jorhat police on Friday busted a gang of thieves responsible for a series of burglaries at two residential apartment complexes in the city earlier this month, arresting three accused and two jewellers who had purchased the stolen gold. The development brought the curtain down on a case that had sent shockwaves through Jorhat’s residential communities. The gang had struck twice — first at Madhukunj Apartment on Feb 5 and then at ABG Heights, located near the Na-Ali flyover, on Feb 7. In both instances, the masked gang, captured on CCTV cameras, gained entry into the premises by breaking iron grilles and gates and targeting flats whose owners were absent at the time. Gold jewellery and other valuables worth over Rs 30 lakh were looted in the two incidents.Following the incidents, a special team of Jorhat police, led by Hrishikesh Hazarika, officer-in-charge of Jorhat Police Station, launched an investigation, analysing CCTV footage from both apartment complexes and piecing together leads that pointed to Dalgaon in Darrang district. The team travelled to Darrang and apprehended three members of the gang — identified as Lukman Ali, Saidur Rahman and Nur Mohammad Ali, all residents of Dalgaon.Investigators also tracked down two jewellers to whom the stolen gold had been sold. Abu Bakkar Siddique of Dalgaon, Darrang district, and Imran Ahmed of Chapra of Barpeta district, were arrested for their role in receiving and purchasing the stolen jewellery. All five accused are currently being interrogated at Jorhat Police Station.
