Guwahati: In a coordinated joint operation, the GRP, RPF, and Assam Police arrested 26 drug peddlers and addicts and seized 29 grams of suspected heroin, empty vials, syringes, and nearly 20 kg of cannabis plants along the railway tracks between Guwahati and Kamakhya Railway Station.Police officials from the Central Guwahati Police District (CGPD) and West Guwahati Police District (WGPD) assisted in the drive. During a press conference on Sunday, joint commissioner of police (JCP) Ankur Jain said they have started the special operation from Saturday along the railway stretch between Guwahati Railway Station and Kamakhya Railway Station and it would continue for couple of days.“The four joint teams, all in civilian clothes, carried out the operation against drugs. The operation lasted for about two and a half to three hours on Saturday. We arrested 26 drug peddlers and addicts,” JCP Jain said.“Apart from the arrests and seizures, the joint team detected illegal cannabis cultivation along railway tracks in different parts of the stretch. Nearly 20 kg of cannabis plants were uprooted and destroyed on the spot to prevent further use and distribution,” Jain said.He further said an eviction drive is underway along the railway tracks and around scrap dump areas, which will continue extensively to remove encroachments. Police teams will carry out the operation regularly to ensure the areas remain free of illegal occupation.Officials said the operation was launched to tackle the growing menace of narcotics in the city and to ensure the safety of public spaces, particularly areas surrounding railway infrastructure. Railway corridors have often been identified as sensitive zones due to frequent movement of people and the potential for illicit activities in isolated stretches.Legal proceedings have been initiated against all arrested persons under relevant provisions of the law.
