Jodhpur: Police arrested a man posing as a fake intelligence officer Monday after complaints that he duped army jawans by promising to arrange loans. Police said cases were reported in many states.The arrest followed a complaint from the office of Army Intelligence, which informed police that a person was roaming around the army area in the Ratanada area for the past few days posing as a captain in Army Intelligence. The office suspected he was searching for targets in the army area to dupe them.“On the information, we rolled out a team and initiated a search operation based on the information and identification of the suspect in the designated area,” said a police officer.Police said the accused, identified as Sagar Guleria (26), a resident of Jalandhar (Punjab), was found sitting in a restaurant in the area on Monday morning wearing a uniform.“On interrogation, it was found that he had swindled many army jawans in the name of getting them loan. The amount is said to be in crores,” said an officer, adding that many women also fell victim to his cheating in the name of loans.The office said he would always put on an army uniform while in the field, search for targets and influence them with his position.“So far, he has 7 complaint for cheating and 8 complaints online for cyber crimes have been found to be registered in Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, J&K and West Bengal,” said the officer.Police said preliminary investigation revealed that Guleria earlier worked as a clerk with the army but, due to suspected activities, he disappeared and was declared an absconder in 2024.“He was once caught by the Haryana police last year in a similar case but managed to jump the bail and continued targeting people in other districts.”
