Srinagar, Aug 22: Government Degree Colleges across Jammu & Kashmir have recorded a sharp rise in undergraduate admissions for the 2026-27 academic session, with 47,150 students admitted during Phase-I.
According to Directorate of Colleges, HED, J&K, the admissions are around 16 per cent higher than the nearly 40,800 students admitted during the corresponding phase last year.
Of the total admissions, 35,040 were made through direct allocation, while 12,110 students secured seats through the walk-in process.
The Directorate of Colleges, Higher Education Department, J&K, said the admission process was conducted through the Centralised Admission Portal, jkadmissions.in, based on 10+2 merit.
The portal provided a Union Territory-wide merit list and allowed students to upgrade their allotted seats through successive rounds. It also enabled eligible candidates to compete for programmes of their choice across J&K.
Director Colleges, HED, J&K, Dr Sheikh Ajaz Bashir said merit remained the foundation of the admission process at every stage, including college allocation and allotment of Major, Minor, Multidisciplinary and Skill Enhancement Courses.
He said 106 Government Degree Colleges recorded an increase in enrollment compared to the previous academic session, while most other colleges maintained their previous enrollment levels.
The Directorate described the rise as significant against the broader trend of declining enrollment across several areas of higher education in the country.
It said the admission process was completed within the scheduled timeline, with college principals, admission coordinators and verification teams playing a key role in its implementation.
The Directorate also attributed the increased interest among students to positive feedback about teaching standards and academic opportunities available in Government Degree Colleges.
Phase-II admissions will be opened against vacant seats after the results of the biannual and supplementary higher secondary examinations are declared.
The schedule for Phase-II will be notified separately. Candidates eligible for the second phase have been advised to follow the Centralised Admission Portal for updates.
