Srinagar, Sep 09: Jammu and Kashmir generated 9,342.77 kg of biomedical waste every day in 2025, with Kashmir accounting for more than three-fourths of the total, according to the Annual Report on Bio-Medical Waste Management for the year 2025 submitted by the Jammu and Kashmir Pollution Control Committee (JKPCC) to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The report, prepared for the period January to December 2025 under the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016, puts the total number of healthcare facilities in Jammu and Kashmir at 9,028, with 23,153 beds and three Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facilities (CBMWTFs).
According to the report, 7,252.77 kg of biomedical waste was generated daily in Kashmir, compared with 2,090 kg per day in Jammu, taking the overall reported generation to 9,342.77 kg per day.
Among Kashmir districts, Srinagar recorded the highest biomedical-waste generation at 2,306 kg per day, followed by Baramulla at 1,768 kg, Kupwara at 994.26 kg, Budgam at 468 kg, Pulwama at 341.5 kg, Bandipora at 340 kg, Anantnag at 303.3 kg, Shopian at 301 kg, Ganderbal at 268.45 kg and Kulgam at 162.26 kg per day.
In Jammu province, Jammu district generated 1,103.860 kg per day, followed by Samba at 238.089 kg, Kathua at 231.769 kg, Reasi at 187.980 kg, Udhampur at 185.829 kg, Rajouri at 57.060 kg, Doda at 34.170 kg, Poonch at 23.513 kg, Ramban at 18.600 kg and Kishtwar at 9.211 kg per day.
The report shows that bedded healthcare facilities accounted for the bulk of biomedical waste generation. Such facilities generated 1,559.994 kg per day in Jammu and 6,092.62 kg per day in Kashmir, totalling 7,652.564 kg per day.
Non-bedded healthcare facilities generated another 530.14 kg per day in Jammu and 1,160.15 kg per day in Kashmir, taking the combined figure to 1,690.29 kg per day.
The total biomedical waste generated—2,029 kg per day in Jammu and 6,897 kg per day in Kashmir—was treated through common biomedical-waste treatment facilities, giving a combined figure of 8,926 kg per day.
Another 1,009.391 kg per day in Jammu and 724 kg per day in Kashmir, totalling 1,733.391 kg per day, was disposed of through authorised recyclers. In areas where common treatment facilities were not available, 60.606 kg per day in Jammu and 356 kg per day in Kashmir was treated through deep burial, amounting to 416.606 kg per day.
The report records one CBMWTF in operation in Jammu and two in Kashmir, while one additional facility in Jammu was under construction.
The healthcare facilities, including bedded and non-bedded, have done 3,587 violations in Jammu and 3,138 in Kashmir, totalling 6,725.
The JKPCC report also records 730 show-cause notices/directions issued to healthcare facilities during 2025. Of these, 595 were issued in Jammu and 135 in Kashmir. One direction was also issued to a Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facility in Jammu. The report further records 206 closure orders issued in Jammu and 23 in Kashmir.
